Cosm, an immersive entertainment technology company, is expanding its domed theaters and film library. The company started by programming planetariums, and its name combines "cosmos" and "colosseum."

Cosm has opened four theaters since 2024, near Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta and Detroit. A Cleveland location is set to open in 2027, with a 100-foot dome, according to the report. Cosm says its sports screenings often sell out.

The company has partnered with Warner Bros. to show "The Matrix," "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" and "It." Cosm also signed a deal with Universal to bring "Shrek" to its domes in December.

Cosm does not disclose its financials because it is privately held. Tickets range from $18 for a matinee to about $70 for prime seats or in-demand showings, not including concession fees.

Sony invested $100 million in Cosm in June, taking a minority stake. Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman and CEO Ravi Ahuja joined Cosm's board. Jay Levine, Sony's chief strategy and business operations officer, told CNBC that Sony sees Cosm as an experiential platform with long-term potential.

Alexis Scalice, head of Cosm Studios, told CNBC that Cosm works to enhance films without detracting from the story. Cosm's film screenings have so far featured mostly movies released decades ago, which Scalice said draws on nostalgia.
